cole had a pretty cute passport photo taken a week or so ago, when i went yesterday to submit all of the paper work, they didn’t approve the lighting so we had to go get retakes.

as you can see, he really turned on the charm.

also, i think tackling both the passport office (twice!) and the biggest mall in north america two days before christmas deserves some sort of medal — i chose a cupcake ๐Ÿ˜‰

yesterday was a wonderfully jam packed day beginning with a little road trip to find the perfect christmas tree (found it!), followed by lila’s first piano recital (so cute!), and finished up with a slightly chaotic dinner out (as they usually are in our world).

a combination of deep snow and a little boy who likes to be held kept my camera tucked securely in it’s bag for most of the day, but i did manage to grab a few snaps with my phone of our tree hunting (and snow eating, ha!) adventures!

it feels really good to finally be getting into the christmas spirit after a few months of crazy. bring on the holidays ๐Ÿ™‚

and now for the story of cole’s birthday in camera and phone snaps — balloons (yes that’s an upside down 5… shhh!), birthday pancakes complete with sparkler, opening and playing with presents, a sledding adventure, his new favourite movie (planes!) and birthday cupcakes (he got me to relight the candles at least a dozen times, haha.)

we had great day celebrating our fave little dude! now it’s time to plan the final touches for their party this weekend and then i can finally share their official birthday posts next week ๐Ÿ™‚

a random assortment of phone and camera snapshots of the things she chose to spend her birthday doing: opening presents, reading the birthday book, french toast with candles, a visit to the museum, deciphering birthday code, sledding with her brother, and last of all, birthday cake with a birthday crown!

one of those (incredibly) rare perfect days where everything goes according to plan, and everybody smiles all day — can’t think of a better way to have celebrated this amazing little lady.

a number of people on instagram have requested the ‘recipe’, so here it goes:

1. prepare your favourite white cake recipe per the instructions (we just used a boxed mix!)
2. divide batter into three bowls, tint one bowl each orange and yellow and leave the third
3. layer batter in cupcake cups
4. bake according to your recipe
5. top with your favourite frosting (we use the recipe on the back of the roger’s icing sugar bag — never fails!) and a piece of candy corn
6. peel papers off when ready to serve

ridiculously easy and crazy cute. just the way i like it ๐Ÿ™‚

inspired by this pin (i wish i knew the original source!), we collected some leaves from the lone tree in our front yard and got to work ๐Ÿ™‚

two quick tips: if you’re having your kiddos do the punching, i’d recommend using small punches — it was quite tricky getting the leaves all the way into the larger heart punch. also, if you want the art to look good for more than a day, try preserving the leaves with glycerin. (we didn’t and our hearts are looking rather crinkly now!)
